In 2014, the Miistakis Institute hosted a Citizen Science Conference, exploring this diverse field with sessions on program design, evaluation, policy implications, technology and applications in parks and protected areas. This links to the website that chronicled that event.

GrizzTracker: informing grizzly bear management
Presentation: GrizzTracker: informing grizzly bear management
Addressing complex sustainability challenges requires innovative approaches that integrate stakeholders, science, technology, and community engagement. Citizen science is a growing approach to engage the public in science to improve societal outcomes associated with learning, community action and knowledge production. We will introduce GrizzTracker, an established citizen science program developed by a multi stakeholder partnership to improve monitoring of grizzly bear populations and garner support from Albertans to implement conservation action. The Alberta Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan recognizes that people are integral to achieving recovery success and establishing or improving community engagement in support of grizzly bear conservation is vital. GrizzTracker serves as a prototype for involving Albertans in monitoring and managing species at risk.
