Remote Cameras Installed on Alberta Highway 3

The cameras will study wildlife movement before and after construction of AB Transportation and Economic Corridor's new Hwy 3 road mitigation system.

In mid-December, Miistakis and partners spent three days installing 47 remote cameras along Highway 3, where the newly announced road mitigation system will enhance both motorist safety and wildlife movement from Lundbreck to the Alberta-British Columbia border. These cameras are a vital part of our Reconnecting the Rockies - Alberta project, conducted in partnership with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Biodiversity Pathways at the University of British Columbia, and Nature Conservancy Canada. The project's overarching goal is to expand road ecology research and strengthen the integration of ecological connectivity into government planning and policy.

The data collected from these remote cameras, combined with GPS collar data, will provide valuable insights into wildlife movement patterns and adaptation during and after construction. This research will also assess the effectiveness of crossing structures and address wildlife management challenges. The results will enhance our current understanding and guide the future placement and design of wildlife crossings, both new and retrofitted.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Reconnecting the Rockies project! Thank you to our project funders: Wilburforce Foundation, Woodcock Foundation, and Parks Canada’s National Program for Ecological Corridors.
