Beavers in the spotlight: From BeaverCON to remote sensing, discover how these ecosystem engineers are sparking conversations, inspiring research and driving change!

The Miistakis Institute has been collaborating with Cows and Fish on beaver-focused initiatives since 2012, and this work continues to inspire and evolve. In October, Holly Kinas and Nilo Sinnatamby traveled to Boulder, Colorado, to attend BeaverCON. Holly co-presented highlights from our Working with Beavers project alongside Kerri O’Shaughnessy (Cows and Fish) and Alvin First Rider (Blood Tribe Land Management). Being part of a community of passionate beaver advocates and exchanging ideas was truly inspiring. As Dr. Emily Fairfax from the University of Minnesota put it, “Beavers are totally having a moment!” - and we couldn’t agree more!

Our enthusiasm carried into November, when we hosted a remote sensing workshop led by Dr. Fairfax. This hands-on session introduced the incredible potential of using remote sensing tools to monitor beaver benefits over space and time. Equipped with these insights, we’re eager to explore how this knowledge can enhance our beaver-related work.
