Summer Student Profile: Amelia Crane Bear

Oki. My name is Amelia Crane Bear (She Who Offers in Water). I am a third-year Environmental Science student at Mount Royal University, and I am also a proud member of the Siksika Nation. This spring I have begun working with Miistakis Institute as a Summer Research Student. Part of my time here will be developing an applicable case study connecting the Bow River Regional Wetland Datasets to Siksika Nation lands. I hope to bring my unique perspective and highlight new ways these datasets can be used. The more people we have using this data, the more wetlands we can help preserve and restore.

The second part of my time here involves looking into the feasibility of bison reintroduction in a local area. I have always been passionate about the buffalo and understand their importance as a keystone species. Through my partnership with Miistakis, I have been given the opportunity to research this further, network with others who work with bison, and am supported by a team of experienced scientists. Over the summer I am developing stronger research skills and building my network for the future. As a student I am also able to learn about many of the cool projects Miistakis has going on and understand the industry on a deeper level. I am grateful to be working on projects that are aligned with my career goals and allow me to connect my passions with my employment.
