Highway 3 Rock Creek Underpass Completion

Our Reconnecting the Rockies – Alberta monitoring work has already confirmed wildlife use of the brand-new infrastructure.

We're thrilled to share that the new wildlife underpass on Highway 3 at Rock Creek in Pincher Creek is now complete! This important infrastructure provides a safe crossing for deer, elk, and other wildlife, helping reduce vehicle collisions while maintaining critical ecological connectivity. The underpass is a key milestone for Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridor’s (TEC) wildlife mitigation system along Highway 3, as well as for the years of wildlife monitoring and research conducted through our past Linking Landscapes, and current Reconnecting the Rockies – Alberta project.

In just the first month of operation, camera monitoring of the underpass has documented an estimated 76 animals, primarily mule deer, using the underpass to safely cross the highway. We look forward to continuing camera and GPS collar monitoring to understand wildlife responses to completed infrastructure and to guide future mitigation efforts on Highway 3 and beyond. Congratulations to TEC on this milestone achievement – supporting safer roads for people and wildlife while keeping Alberta’s landscapes connected!

The Reconnecting the Rockies - Alberta project is undertaken collaboratively with the Miistakis Institute, Biodiversity Pathways, University of British Columbia Okanagan, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (in conjunction with Transportation and Economic Corridors), and Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative. This project is supported by funding generously provided by Parks Canada’s National Program for Ecological Corridors, the Calgary Foundation, Wilburforce Foundation, Woodcock Foundation, and Minister’s Special Licence Resident Draw Grants.
