| Transfer of Development Credits (TDCs) in Alberta: An Information Session and Application Workshop |

Transfer of Development Credits concept is generating a significant amount of discussion in Alberta, especially among municipalities. Red Deer County and the Miistakis Institute, who are currently working on a TDC feasibility project, hosted a workshop to inform the provincial discussion. The goal was to raise the level of awareness about the current state of knowledge and activity in Alberta, as well as to showcase several successful American examples.
The workshop was well-attended, with over 80 participants representing 12 municipalities five provincial agencies, four land trust groups, and two planning companies.
The first day of the information session and workshop consisted of:
- Presenters from the Miistakis Institute and the University of Calgary gave overview presentations on the Transfer of Development Credits tool
- Presenters from the American counties of Boulder (Colorado), Larimer (Colorado) and Calvert (Maryland) providing overviews of the features and evolution of their Transfer of Development Rights programs; and
- Presenters from Red Deer County, the Municipal District of Bighorn, and the Beaver Hills Initiative providing updates and overviews of their efforts to implement TDC programs locally.
The second day was the workshop day, and participants were divided into small breakout groups to answer questions around the following key components of Transfer of Development Credits programs:
- Sending Areas
- Receiving Areas; and
- Credit Transfer Systems
