Data Framework | Data Management | Metadata

Introduction

Welcome to the CRP's Spatial Data Framework - an online resource that allows CRP members to search for, learn about, and potentially access spatial data sets from member Municipalities, regional data from the CRP, and other data from various sources. This is your first and best resource for learning about spatial data within the Greater Calgary Region. This tool will help you think beyond your jurisdictional boundaries, and will facilitate the creation of collaborative regional strategies and plans.

To search for available data, simply follow the instructions at the top of the Data Framework page. Also, please note that this is a decentralized framework that only provides access to spatial data records that CRP members have agreed to share; other data sets may exist that are not distributed through this tool.

This framework allows users access to metadata - that is, data files that describe spatial data sets. In some cases, direct access to the actual spatial data is granted; in others, instructions on how to access the data are included in the metadata record.

This is an access tool, not an online mapping tool - you can not use this framework to display, query, or analyze spatial data at this time.

How to be Involved

The CRP and its members can distribute metadata and/or data in two main ways:

  1. Metadata records and spatial data (if desired) can be linked to the framework through the Regional Metadata Server. This is a permanent dynamic connection, established between the Regional Spatial Data Framework and each member, that identifies available data and their infrastructure needs, while maintaining local ownership and control over all data and metadata.
  2. Metadata records and spatial day can be uploaded to a regional FTP site folder that is specific to each member maintaining ownership and control over all data and metadata.

All data that is distributed through the Framework must, at minimum, conform to the CRP Regional Metadata standard and be in an FGDC compliant format. Information on the standard and an online tool for creating compliant metadata can be found here.
